Electrically conductive EMI adhesive

How to choose the right EMC adhesive for electronics

The Swelex range includes electrically conductive adhesives.

If you need to join parts in electronics where it is important that electricity can be conducted through the adhesive, then conductive adhesives, or EMC adhesives for electronics, are the way to go. This particular adhesive is an electrically conductive adhesive and is used when traditional soldering is not possible or desirable - for example, when components are sensitive to heat or when you want a thin and precise joint.

What are electrically conductive adhesives?

Electrically conductive adhesive is an adhesive that contains small metal particles, often silver or nickel, which allows the adhesive to conduct electricity between the surfaces you glue together. It is used in everything from circuit boards and sensors to shielding against electromagnetic interference (EMI) and static electricity.

Which type should I choose?

There are different types of conductive adhesives, and the choice depends on what you are going to use it for:

  • Silicone-based adhesive: Best if you need a flexible adhesive for EMI shielding and anti-static applications. It is also good if you want to be able to cure the adhesive at room temperature
  • Epoxy adhesive: Provides a strong and durable joint, ideal for applications where the adhesive is exposed to heat or mechanical stress. Epoxy adhesives are often used when you need an extra durable and heat-resistant solution
  • One-component adhesive: Easy to use, requires no mixing and cures at room temperature. Good for smaller and thinner joints
  • Two-component adhesive: Requires mixing before use and is best suited for larger joints or when you want to be able to store the adhesive longer

Advantages of electrically conductive adhesives

There are many good reasons to choose EMC adhesives:

  • You can attach sensitive electronic components without exposing them to high temperatures
  • The adhesive can be used on many different materials, such as metal, plastic and ceramics
  • It's a convenient alternative to soldering, especially when you need a thin, precise and reliable electrical connection
  • Vibration & shock resistant sealant for electronic devices

Tips when choosing EMC adhesives for electronics

  • Think about what is most important for your application: flexibility, strength, heat resistance or fast curing.
  • Check that the adhesive is suitable for the materials you want to glue.
  • If in doubt, contact an expert or supplier for advice on the right product for your project.
