Heat pipes & advanced cooling profiles

Efficient heat management in a compact design

Heat pipes and advanced cooling profiles are high-performance solutions for efficient heat dissipation in high power density electronic systems. Combining passive heat transfer with innovative geometry, these solutions enable rapid dissipation and transport of heat from components to heat sinks or other heat dissipating surfaces.

How do heat pipes work?

A heat pipe consists of a tube filled with a liquid/vapourising system. The heat from the component vaporises the liquid at the hot end. The vaporising liquid is quickly transported to the cold end where it condenses, gives off the heat and returns as liquid via capillary action. This process makes heat pipes extremely efficient at transporting heat over distances with minimal temperature drop.

Benefits of heat pipes and advanced cooling profiles

  • High thermal conductivity over long distances
  • Efficient distribution of heat in small or confined spaces
  • Flexibility in design and geometry
  • Lightweight and compact form factor
  • Can be integrated with other cooling methods for maximum performance

When to choose heat pipes or advanced cooling profiles?

Heat pipes and advanced cooling profiles are particularly suitable when:

  • Power losses are high and air cooling is not enough
  • Space is limited and traditional flanges do not fit
  • Even temperature distribution across components is critical
  • Combination with liquid cooling or hybrid solutions desired

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

What is the difference between a heat pipe and a standard heat sink?

  • A heat pipe transports heat efficiently over distances with minimal temperature drop, while a heat sink dissipates heat locally mainly via surface and convection.

Can heat pipes be combined with liquid cooling?

  • Yes, heat pipes are often used to conduct heat from critical components to a chiller or radiator.

Are advanced cooling profiles customisable?

  • Yes, Swelex offers both standard profiles and customised solutions for specific effects, spaces and design requirements.

Can they be used in harsh environments?

  • Yes, the materials and construction can be adapted for industrial, transport and medical environments.
